Incumbent Republican Amy Weirich defeated Democratic challenger Joe Brown in her bid for reelection to the post of District Attorney General of Shelby County on Thursday, August 7.
Weirich got into hot water earlier this year when she downplayed state bar and judicial findings of prosecutorial misconduct against one of her veteran prosecutors, Tom Henderson, and refused to carry out any disciplinary measures against him other than removing him from the case in which he committed the misconduct.
Weirich beat her opponent handily. The New York Times reports that “with 96 percent of precincts reporting, Weirich had 65 percent of the vote compared with 35 percent for Brown.”
Brown was the first African-American prosecutor in Memphis and formally a TV judge on the self-titled show, Judge Joe Brown, which ran from 1998 through 2013. He was arrested and jailed earlier this year on contempt of court charges following an outburst in front of a juvenile court judge.
